'An Introduction to VAT' Course

Part One

This one-day course provides an introduction to the basic principles of VAT as well as covering the specific issues faced by local authorities.

The course aims to give the participant a good basic awareness of VAT, including the ability to identify situations where VAT may be an issue. Each topic is clearly explained, with the use of case-studies and exercises to reinforce key points.

The course would benefit those staff who:

  • are new to VAT but need a foundation on which to build their knowledge
  • deal with issues that have significant VAT implications (e.g. capital accountants, lawyers, surveyors)
  • have a ad-hoc involvement with VAT - e.g. raise/process invoices, allocate miscellaneous income
  • have senior management responsibilty for the VAT function

Part Two

Our new one-day course is an advanced introduction to VAT.  This course, aimed at the established VAT practitioner, takes a fresh look at VAT issues, covering a wide range of topics from International Services to Supply & Consideration and from Bad Debt Relief to Exemptions in VAT law.  The course aims to give the participant the ability to identify the correct VAT treatment when dealing with more complex VAT transactions.

The course would benefit:

  • those with day to day responsibility for VAT management but require further training
  • capital accountants
  • those with senior management responsibility for the VAT function

The course tutors are Peter Gladdish, Richard Strevens, Rosie Jones, Tracy Andrews and Gordon Turner, who all have considerable experience of working with local authorities of all sizes on a broad range of VAT issues. Peter is also a member of the CIPFA VAT Committee.

Duration: each course = 1 day (09:30 - 16:30)
